I hope you’re having a wonderful day and enjoying your readings. ❤️ Today, I’m super excited, as always, to bring you a new post, this time all about my favorite book cover features! A topic that although I don’t see much of, I think it’s a lot of fun to chat a bit about. 😍 Obviously, we know not to judge a book by its cover, but let’s be honest, sometimes we do and many of those times it’s because it has some feature on it that really catches our attention based on our personal preferences. When I refer to features, I could be talking about any factor that is part of the cover, as well as any detail it has, such as objects, letters, images, colors, and so on. 🙌🏻
In my case, this time I’ll be sharing with you the 5 fave characteristics that I love to find in the covers every time one is revealed, and they’re those details that make me fall in love with the covers, even before I know what the book is about. 🌟 In this post, we’re going to judge a little bit some of our favorite covers, and we can even go a little deeper and think about what it is that makes us even buy a book just based on the cover, and what it is about it that makes us love it so much. 😊
I hope this will be an entertaining post to also admire some of the book covers I’ll be using as examples today, and I also hope you’ll share with me your own cover preferences, as I’m really curious to know! 👀

What I call Abstract Illustrations refers to the covers when they don’t have a clear meaning, but can be composed of many objects that give a lot of information accompanied by various symbols, or on the contrary, can be more simple focusing on a single object, lines and/or the title of the book. This is one of the most difficult points to explain, but I hope it will make more sense once you see the covers, in general, I feel that they’re those covers that don’t have meaning nor that tell you what the book is about, but they’re like a riddle in a way.

People on the covers are super unpopular and many of us don’t like them, which I totally understand, book covers with real people are rarely successful, but what about illustrated people? This is the age of illustrations or paintings of faces and people on covers, I find this kind of design more than beautiful, almost romantic in a way, and it’s always a big plus for me when I see a cover with this feature.

Dark covers look SO GOOD! and by this, I don’t mean creepy or horror covers, but mostly I’m obsessed with the black backgrounds in covers, as well as when we have many colors in dark tones and then a single predominant color, I feel they have a lot of character and a lot of presence, no doubt, these are the books that my eyes will go to in the bookstore and, although I don’t think it’s connected, usually these books have incredible plots.

📸 The Infinity Courts (The Infinity Courts #1) by Akemi Dawn Bowman
This is another factor that is one of my favorite ever, and I see that it has been popular for a few years now thankfully, and I hope it continues as a trend. Vegetation on covers is beautiful either way and can give elegance and romance as well as mystery, fantasy, and even a horror touch. So, it’s a factor that can be played with a lot, and is of course made up of everything from flowers to trees and much more.

Well, this one really doesn’t require any explanation other than I love pastel colors, especially pinks and blues, I think they’re absolutely beautiful and look lovely on covers, in fact, I have many light pink books and I never fail to love them every time I see them.

i didn’t realize that i loved illustrated people on covers until i saw six crimson cranes and this poison heart tbh! the upcoming cover for legendborn 2, bloodmarked, also fits into that category and is SO beautiful. great post!💜

The same thing happened to me! I was always saying how much I didn’t like real people on covers, but then this evolution of illustrated people happened, and I absolutely loved them! I have to check out the books you mention! 😍😍

So I don’t read as much YA these days anymore, but the covers are always rockin’! Elizabeth Lim has been blessed by the cover gods for all her books, I thought the covers for her Spin the Dawn duology was beautiful until I saw Six Crimson Cranes which is even more jaw dropping!

I love that you’ve grouped cover themes together, it makes you think about the patterns among covers. I love illustrated people on covers… they look so cool!! Literally pieces of art. You’ve just made me realise how cool flowers on covers are… so pretty but work so well with horror too!! And big yes to pastel colours… I’m so glad they are on the rise (at least I think they are)!! 😍😍 You’ve Reached Sam is one of my favourites for sure!

Absolutely! I hadn’t thought about that, but clearly there are some patterns and designs that are similar, probably because they get more attention or are a trending that sells, obviously. Oh, illustrated people are wonderful ❤️ & yes! pastel colors are so pretty, super aesthetic and romantic, I love them & I also hope they continue to be popular 😍✨✨✨

Some of the covers with illustrated faces on them can be really gorgeous! (Nothing can beat the six crimson cranes cover, us or uk edition)

I definitely love books with abstract covers! There’s just something that draws me in, especially since they don’t really give away a lot if anything about what the book is actually about and are the ones that intrigue me the most and are probably my favorite kinds of covers.

That’s exactly what I love about those kind of covers, the fact that they’re kind of mysterious covers that don’t give much of a glimpse of what the book is about, it’s like the magic they convey and I love it! I’m glad you like them too. 😍✨❤️

This is such a wonderful post 🤩🤩 and I can relate to every cover you’ve mentioned here, I also adore really minimalistic covers as well which have the title, the author name and maybe one illustration of something from the book
Also illustrated people on the covers are so much better and appealing, the cover for RWRB, Boyfriend Material and Written in the Stars are all so damn cute and wonderful
And dark covers…oophs 🤩🤩 especially foiled dark covers 💘
