⚡️ Hi guys! Happy start of the week, I hope you’re having the best day, full of good readings! 🥰 I’m having so much fun making All these posts, it’s really a blessing for me to share with you all about my year in readings and chat a little, it makes me SO SO happy, so thanks for being there for me.❤️  Today I bring you a mini top of those readings that ended up surprising me way more than I expected, and on the contrary, those that ended up disappointing me when I expected a lot from them.
Later in the month, I’ll be making my post of favorite books of the year and my least favorites, so this has nothing to do with that and I will not be repeating books. What this post represents, on the one hand, are those readings of which I didn’t expect anything and ended up being incredible and on the other hand, those of which I did expect a lot and ended up falling short. I hope you understand what I’m trying to do here 😅, I’m very excited to talk to you about these books because even though some of them disappointed me, I feel that they aren’t bad books at all and I feel that you could enjoy them yourself. 👏🏻

Disappointing Books of 2019 🙄

 

⚡️ The Devouring Gray (The Devouring Gray #1) by Christine Lynn Herman || This book sounded like the full package for me, I LOVE everything that has to do with mystery plots that involve some kind of fantastic turn, as in this case: powers and magical family lineages, in addition, the plot promises an atmospheric story, where there’s a mysterious creature living in the woods that surround this town and boys begin to disappear, I mean, it was EVERYTHING I needed in my life, so since I knew about it, I just knew I had to read it. Time only made my emotion grow and I guess in some way was my fault for going into it with SO many expectations, what happened is that it takes me almost a whole month to finish it, and not because the plot wasn’t interesting, but it was built in a strange and messy way and also, personally, I think the writing style is very slow, which made me very frustrated with the book. Even so, it has incredible points and that’s why I’ll still give the sequel a chance, especially it’s a beautifully atmospheric book and although the characters are nothing new, they have great potential, so I hope to create a stronger bond with them in the next book. I’m still hopeful because I think the idea of ​​the story is super original and magical.

⚡️ King of Scars (Nikolai Duology #1) by Leigh Bardugo || Of course, I was very excited to read this book so when I finally went for it I expected it to blow my mind completely and in a way, it did it with that wonderful plot twist and the writing style is supreme, but I really have that strong feeling that this book has a LOT of filling and absolutely unnecessary scenes and now that I think about it, I think I finished reading it because I love the characters and would read about them all day no matter what they’re doing, you know? but I think that being totally objective and thinking only of the plot, it’s not the strongest Leigh’s work I’ve read, it has many scenes of them going from one side to another and like a million pages of internal monologues, which simply didn’t need to be there. Even so, I really enjoy reading my beloved children, and being able to see them grow is a pleasure for me, so of course and after that wonderful/controversial ending, I’ll be reading the sequel, I hope it’s a little shorter but that goes straight to the point and have a little more action and impact.

⚡️ An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson || I still feel so bad for not having loved this book as I hoped to do it and in fact, I feel worse for not being able to share that emotion with many of you that I know loved this one. I want to start by loving the writing style cause was so good, as well as the landscape descriptions, and that’s why I’ll be giving the author another chance very soon, but this is one of those books where the plot just didn’t work for me, you know? I started loving it and then it was like a big mess for me, the characters walk for a place to another during the whole book and I’m not a big fan of the characters traveling, I always tend to feel stressed when it happens for a long time, super personal of course. On the other hand, the inta-love didn’t work for me either, the romance didn’t make that click that made me enjoy it and ended up bothering me a little, in the end, I was already so tired that I didn’t make that connection with the rest the story. One of my most unpopular opinions of this year, no doubt, but I hope to love Sorcery of Thorns *fingers crossed*

Surprising Books of 2019 🥰  

 

⚡️ Heart of Mist (The Oremere Chronicles #1) by Helen Scheuerer || Wow, I have a very particular variety of books here to show you! This particular book was super kindly sent to me by the publisher and even so the first moment when I agreed to read it I thought it sounded good, I didn’t expect to get hooked SO MUCH with this story, I ended up reading the whole trilogy and guys, I assure you that it only gets better and better. After having read so much fantasy I tend to be much more critical and strict with those I read now, I hope they to surprise me with something original and this whole trilogy has that effect on me. I talked a little about it in my previous post of 2019 New-to-Me Authors, so I don’t want to overwhelm you by telling you the same thing, but it’s just a book that plays very well with the fantastic world but it also has a very hard touch of reality and it’s very well done, is really easy to read and I LOVE the world-building, it’s one of my favorite things. So if you want to live a good adventure, full of action, magic, lost worlds, and fantastic creatures, you should read this trilogy, I promise you’ll love it!

⚡️ Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys || I read this fantastic book with the beautiful Rita and thank God I did it, maybe otherwise I would never have read this kind of book, the thing is… I’m not a big fan of historical fiction, I always find it difficult to follow, maybe it’s easier for me when it has a fantastical touch, for example, you know? but this book, in particular, is based on a real historical fact and is absolutely hard to read, but at the same time, eye-opening and for me, it was super impactful to know a reality of which I was very ignorant, so I feel it was a blessing to have read this. The author did a fantastic job investigating in-depth to give us a true story from the point of view of a young girl. It was a pleasant surprise for me, it leaves you thinking and reflecting a lot on the cruel things that so many human beings have had to go through unfairly and it’s absolutely heartbreaking, but at the same time, I couldn’t recommend it enough, it’s SO worth reading it and it’s a story that stays with you over time. I hope to read more from the author next year.

⚡️ Vicious (Sinners of Saint #1) by L.J. Shen  || This is so crazy because this isn’t my kind of book at all, I don’t think I read anything like this since “50 shades”, you know? And surprisingly, I LOVE IT!, I was as absolutely hooked on the story from the minute one I started reading the book. I read it because I was participating in Smutathon, so that’s why I picked it up in the first place. It’s certainly not for everyone, though, I know that there are very opposite opinions due to its content so explicit and difficult to read, so I understand that I just think that clicked with me at that time, and I kind of suffered and I almost cried with the characters, I was so immersed with the stories and the characters’ past, and the stimmy scenes were fire, really good! This is a 100% dark and problematic romance, and I see that, so I want to warn you in case you’re interested in reading it. I’ve heard many people compare the male character as very similar to Cardan of The Cruel Prince and I can see the similarity, so if it’s a type of character that you like, you’ll enjoy this book as well. It’s a very smart story with jumps in time that keep you on the edge of your seat and the romance scenes are 10/10.
I think maybe my most surprise of surprises of 2019 was this book and maybe at some point, I will continue with the series, although it’s not a priority.
